Audi moves into the 'E' era and aims to expand to a 40 model lineup by 2013!

We've previously reported that the Volkswagen Up! Concept will be put into production and Audi, being the luxury arm of Volkswagen Group will get their own version of the Up!; which previously was speculated to be the successor to the Audi A2.

However, with the revealing of Volkswagen's BlueSport Concept, a small 2 seater roadster that's powered by Audi's extremely efficient 2.0TDi engine with a 53mpg rating, Audi of course will also receive their own rendition. However with the 'A' nomenclatures seemingly being taken up left right and center, with the A1 being confirmed to be put into production, with plans for future A2, A7 all coming up; Audi will now break the mould adding 'E' into the current 'A' and 'Q' and performance 'R' lineups.

The Volkswagen Up! will be the Audi E1, under the moniker that features a unique lineup of city cars that are extremely fuel efficient and small in size. The BlueSport Concept, will be the Audi E2, with plans for an E3 and E4.

This will be very interesting as the manufacturer currently had 26 models in total, and they have plans to increase it to 40 models by year 2013. Audi had recently just budged the magical 1 million mark in 2008, and sets a goal of reaching 1.5 million sales in year 2015, becoming the world's largest luxury automaker.

Of course to do that, Audi needs more presence in Asia and especially the Northern America market, where they trail behind the likes of BMW, Mercedes and Lexus by big numbers. So is it a possible goal? Well, given that Lexus achieves that in a short span of 15 years, there's no telling how impossible it is.
