Detroit Auto Show 2009: GM surprises all with the Cadillac Converj Concept!

Cadillac surprised everyone today at the Detroit Motor Show by unveiling the Cadillac Converj, based on the Chevrolet Volt's drivetrain dubbed Voltec. An EV powered, petrol range extender based four seater coupe; now that's interesting and unexpected by the ailing manufacturer, nonetheless showing GM's strong will to continue deliver promising products that not only had great future potentials in terms of profitability, but fascinating to look at as well.

One word to put the Cadillac Converj, is American. It looks American, its outworldly proportioned, yet demands presence. A single charge will travel 64km, yet unlike the Tesla roadster which needs 4hrs before another trip, the Converj is equipped with a small petrol engine range extender to recharge the electric drivetrain.

And remember, as it's an EV car, it produces maximum torque at even 1RPM. Thus instant 370NM of torque shoving your back on this 2+2 Coupe spells only one word = FUN.

So, will the current barrage of CTS-Vs and this Converj propel Cadillac back into the luxury market consumer's radar range? Hoped so, only if GM builds it, and it should be too difficult a thing to do, as the Chevy Volt's got all the basics and groundwork covered.

One thing to note, especially to American manufacturers, this is how you should utilize cross platform engineering, not the stupid rebadge stuffs going on. (i.e Ford and Mercury)
